Shanta Cracks the Sads

Here we are and it is getting colder. It is dark already when I am getting my dinner. Something is very different. Is it weird at your house?

Usually I go for a walk with Meg and then come home and we have breakfast. Meg then goes out in the car. I don’t know where she goes, but she comes home with the smell of dogs on the legs of her pants. I don’t like that much.

And at night she goes out and it’s the same thing. On two nights I know that the smell is puppies, and one other night it is dogs. But the best night is when we go in the car together and I get to go sniffing. It is fantastic! I get lots of chicken and some chews while I’m waiting in the car for my turn.

But now everything has changed. Well not everything actually – we still go for a walk and have breakfast, but now Meg is sitting at the computer all day and I go in the office and stay with her to make sure she is OK.

She doesn’t go anywhere in the day or out at night. And we don’t go anywhere in the car to go sniffing.

I like it when it is warm and sunny because then we are in the garden for a bit. Meg is cutting branches and pulling up little plants and throwing them in the bin. I just don’t understand her. At other times she is putting plants in the ground and telling me to stay off the garden beds so the plants can grow.

I am a good dog and I don’t go on the garden.

Its very quiet at our house with no visitors, but I am getting lots of pats and snuggles.

Is it quiet at your house?

Is it only Melbourne dogs that talk about the weather all the time?

I’m not sure, but the hot weather has certainly made sleeping very difficult. Usually I love to snuggle up under a doona but it has just been too hot for that. Some nights it has been so hot I have got off the bed and slept on the floor where it is a bit cooler.

I have had my wooly coat cut to a short back and sides to escape the heat and I feel much better for it.

If you are a lucky dog, such as my self, you really appreciate having owners that walk you early in the morning or later in the evening when the weather is not so hot.

Some owners do not realise that because we don’t wear shoes, we get burnt feet when the roads and pavements are hot.

Meg says if you humans can’t hold your hand flat on the footpath or road for ten seconds, it is too hot to walk your dog! She is very wise.

Sometimes it is so hot some of my friends say they don’t feel much like eating but I love my food and Meg serves it cool from the fridge. She even feeds me frozen chicken wings (which are delicious), doggy ice blocks that taste of chicken water and have treats inside and sometimes a chew sticking out of them like a handle, and frozen Kongs filled with goodies. Who wouldn’t want to eat that?

When I have been at home I haven’t spent as much time in the garden as I like to, but have lounged around inside in front of the eggnitioner (still no eggs to report). I was outraged to hear that some owners leave their dogs outside on hot days. Some have even been left without shade or water. That is so awful! I think … if Meg saw this happening, she would tell someone who would come and take those dogs away.

I am glad that there are less bushfires and it is not as smoky as it was a while back. That was really unpleasant and Meg says a lot of animals in the bush got killed.

I bet most of you didn’t know that Poodles were such thinkers. Only a Poodle owner would know that.

Summer is with us and along with it has come the scorching heat. And some days have been very smoky – Meg says it is a fire.

Meg and I have a machine that blows out cool air. She said it was an Eggnitioner. I haven’t seen any eggs yet.

We went to visit my friend Leeroy and his human Anne. They don’t have an eggnitioner but they have a fan. That helps make wind, which is a bit cooling. Leeroy has a special mat to lie on that is cool and if he goes out he has a cool coat and a cool bandana that he sometimes wears. He is an older boy and feels the heat more than I do. Meg said she is going to get me a cool mat for in the car.

Leeroy likes frozen fruit to eat. I tried it but was not very keen. He also likes his meat frozen in Kongs like I do. We had one each. His was a big black one and mine was a smaller blue one. We agreed they were delicious.

Meg and Anne are going to take us out for a walk in the morning before it gets hot. Then we can come home and have a big sleep.

Meg has got a new gate built for the back of the car. When we go anywhere in the car, like nosework, we can park under the trees and she can open the back of the car and I am safe inside the car with my water bowl, cool mat, cool treat and shiny cover over the roof, till it is my turn to ‘go sniffing’. She hops in the back with me and reads sometimes. It is very pleasant.

She never leaves me in a hot car.

Keep cool and enjoy the rest of summer with your human. I know I will!
